Hemis Tsechu and the Indus Valley Monasteries

Overview

In the courtyard of Ladakh's richest monastery, cymbals crash and the masked dancers turn — the two-day Hemis Tsechu honours Guru Rinpoche's birth, and unlike the winter festivals it happens in high summer, when the passes are open and the barley is green. This is the anchor for a nine-day monastery circuit along the Indus: dawn prayers with the monks beneath Thiksey's giant Maitreya, the 11th-century Kashmiri-school murals of Alchi (some of the oldest Buddhist painting anywhere), Lamayuru's gompa above its eroded 'moonland', and slow evenings in Leh's old town below the palace. The variable that catches people out is altitude: you land at 3,524m straight from sea level, so the first 48 hours are deliberately empty — hydrate, stroll, sleep. Do not schedule the festival for day two. Festival dates follow the Tibetan lunar calendar, usually late June or July — confirm before booking. Nine days with a driver-guide, guesthouses and festival seats runs about £1,000–£1,300 from Leh. Fly Delhi–Leh; the road alternatives take days.
