Overview

Hegra was the Nabataeans' southern capital — Petra's sister city — and for decades almost nobody could visit. Now its 111 monumental tombs stand in open desert, carved facades staring out of golden sandstone outcrops, with a fraction of Petra's crowds. The image that stays: Qasr al-Farid, the 'Lonely Castle', a single unfinished tomb rising four storeys from an isolated boulder, best at golden hour when the rock ignites. Six days covers the AlUla oasis properly: Hegra's tombs and the Jabal Ithlib ritual sanctuary, the labyrinthine mud-brick old town beneath the citadel, Dadan's lion tombs cut high in a red cliff, Jabal Ikmah — a canyon so dense with ancient inscriptions it is called an open library — and Elephant Rock at sunset with coffee from a fire-pit café in the sand. Nights end stargazing among the Gharameel rock pillars. Practicalities: Saudi eVisa online in minutes; Hegra is visited on ticketed shuttle tours booked through Experience AlUla, so reserve slots before flying; dress modestly, and note alcohol does not exist here. October to March is the season. Direct flights from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dubai. Around £1,400–£1,800 for six days — not budget travel.
