Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh · India
Nothing prepares you for the first morning: your rowing boat slides past Dashashwamedh Ghat as the sun lifts out of the far bank, pilgrims stand waist-deep in the river with cupped hands of water, and the smoke of Manikarnika — where cremation fires have reportedly never gone out — drifts over three thousand years of continuous city. Varanasi is India at maximum intensity, and five slow days is the right dose. The shape of the trip: dawn boat rides, mornings in the tangled galis of the old city, afternoon rest, then the evening Ganga aarti — seven priests, fire, conch and bell — from a boat offshore. Add the raga concerts of Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat and a half day at Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first teaching. Winter visitors should hunt down malaiyo, the saffron milk-foam dessert that exists only on cold mornings. Go October to February; the pre-monsoon heat is brutal. Respect matters at the burning ghats: no photography, keep distance, ignore self-appointed 'guides' demanding donations. Five days with a good local guide for two of them runs about £400–£500 including mid-range guesthouse.
