Overview

Kyoto rewards the traveller who trades the checklist for craft. This week alternates temple walking with hands-on time in the city's workshops: a morning at a Nishijin studio watching an obi take shape on a jacquard loom, an hour selecting a knife with the Aritsugu smiths in Nishiki Market, tea ceremony in a Gion machiya where the teacher corrects your whisking with a smile, and zazen meditation at a Daitoku-ji sub-temple where a monk explains why your knees hurting is not the point. The walking threads it together: through the vermilion torii tunnels of Fushimi Inari at 6.30am before the crowds, along the Philosopher's Path from Nanzen-ji's aqueduct to the silver pavilion, and up through Higashiyama's lanes at dusk when the day-trippers drain away and the lanterns come on. The catch is timing and money: cherry blossom (early April) and autumn leaves (late November) double hotel prices and require booking six months out — the weeks either side deliver 80% of the beauty for half the cost. Seven days with a machiya stay, workshop fees and rail runs about £1,300–£1,600 land cost. Book workshops ahead; the good ones take six people.
