Overview
Obtain the restricted area permit required to enter Upper Mustang — the former Kingdom of Lo, a hidden Tibetan Buddhist enclave north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in a rain shadow desert that remained closed to outsiders until 1992 — and trek through ochre-walled ancient walled cities, cave dwellings, and crumbling chortens to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former kingdom, at 3,840 m. The landscape is genuinely Tibetan; the people maintain the Tibetan Buddhist culture suppressed across the border. One of Nepal's most singular cultural trekking experiences.
