Walk the Skyline Trail in Jasper National Park — 44 km along a high ridge above treeline with panoramic views of the Columbia Icefield and surrounding peaks for most of its length — one of the finest multi-day wilderness trails in North America. The Notch, at 2,510 m the trail's high point, overlooks what feels like the entire Canadian Rockies at once. Grizzly bears frequent the avalanche slopes on either side of the ridge. A Parks Canada permit system limits numbers; booking opens in January for summer dates.
