Reach Machu Picchu via the Inca Jungle Trek — a 4-day alternative combining mountain biking, hiking, zip-lining, and white-water rafting through the subtropical Urubamba Valley — rather than the increasingly overcrowded Classic Inca Trail. The bike descent from Abra Malaga (4,316 m) to Santa Maria covers 65 km of switchback mountain road; the subsequent trail through coffee and cocoa plantations to Aguas Calientes takes two days of walking. The arrival at the Inca citadel via this route feels earned in a way that bus arrivals cannot match.
