Gorges du Verdon, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France · France
Explore Europe's Grand Canyon — the Gorges du Verdon in Provence — from the water and the cliff face. The Verdon River runs emerald green between 700 m limestone walls for 21 km; canoes and kayaks are launched at Castellane and taken out at Lac de Sainte-Croix. The same limestone walls provide single pitch sport climbing at the Escalès cliffs and multi-pitch routes above the river. A road along each rim gives access between climbing areas and viewpoints. The colour of the Verdon's water — caused by ground glacial flour — is extraordinary at midday.
