Trek through Shirakami-Sanchi — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Aomori and Akita prefectures containing the largest remaining virgin beech forest in East Asia — on routes that see a fraction of the visitors of Japan's better-known hiking destinations. The forest is at its most spectacular in mid-October when the beech turns golden. The Juniko (12 Lakes) trail connects a series of deep blue forest pools; the challenging Shirakami Range traversal involves 1,600 m peaks with no maintained trail.
