Journey deep into the Amazon basin on a slow boat from Manaus — the capital of Amazonas state at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Amazon River — into the floodplain forests and igapos of the western Amazon. Sleeping in hammocks on river boats is the classic experience; private cabins are available on faster vessels. Off-river excursions into flooded forest by canoe, piranha fishing, pink river dolphin encounters, and visits to indigenous Tikuna communities define the journey. The rainy season (December-May) floods the forest to depths of 10+ metres.
