Overview
The Dachstein and Gesause regions of Austria contain some of the finest via ferrata in the Alps — iron rungs, cables, and ladders bolted into vertical limestone faces originally installed for wartime military operations. The Intersport Klettersteig on the Donnerkogel is among the most exposed in Europe, crossing a near-horizontal cable traverse above 1,200 m of void. A harness, via ferrata set, and helmet are required; no prior climbing experience is needed but a good head for heights is essential.
