The highest road journey on Earth, pedalling from Lhasa across the Tibetan Plateau to Nepal through five passes over 5,000 m including Gyatso La at 5,220 m. The road surface ranges from smooth tarmac to broken gravel. Altitude sickness is the primary objective hazard; acclimatise in Lhasa for several days before departure. Tibet travel permits are required and change periodically — book through a licensed Tibet agency. The descent from Lalung La into Nepal is one of cycling's great downhills.
