Overview

East Java's Tengger caldera is a landscape in three acts. Act one: the 3 a.m. jeep convoy to the Penanjakan viewpoint, where sunrise reveals Bromo smoking in its sea of volcanic sand with Semeru puffing on the horizon — a view so perfect it looks staged. Act two: the walk across the Sand Sea and up the crater steps to Bromo's rim, sulphur catching your throat, Tenggerese Hindu offerings fluttering into the vent. Act three is the real work: Semeru, Java's highest point at 3,676 m, a two-day climb via the lakeside camp at Ranu Kumbolo and a brutal pre-dawn scree slog — two steps up, one sliding back — to a summit that pulses a gas-and-ash plume every twenty minutes or so. Semeru requires a permit, a registered guide and respect: eruption activity closes the mountain frequently and the summit zone is genuinely dangerous when it does — check current status before committing, and stay clear of the exclusion radius. April to October is the dry season. Around £400 covers a week from Malang or Surabaya with jeeps, permits and guiding — extraordinary value for two of the world's most photogenic volcanoes.
