Overview

Kayaking Antarctica strips the continent's scale down to water level: brash ice crackling like static against the hull, gentoo penguins porpoising alongside, and the exhale of a humpback close enough to smell the krill. Expedition ships carry a small guided kayak group — usually 10-16 paddlers, and the supplement books out months ahead — who launch whenever conditions allow: glassy mornings in Neko Harbour with glacier faces calving thunder across the bay, threading the iceberg sculpture garden off Pléneau Island, or paddling beneath the black towers that wall the Lemaire Channel. You need genuine sea-kayak experience — wet exits, self-rescue, comfort in wind — because conditions turn fast and the safety margin is a support Zodiac, not a beach. Drysuits, pogies and expedition boats are provided; the Drake Passage crossing is the toll paid both ways. November catches pristine snow and courting penguins; January-February brings chicks and peak whale activity.
