Almaty Region, Kazakhstan · Kazakhstan
Charyn Canyon is Kazakhstan's answer to the Grand Canyon, a 80-kilometre ravine carved by the Charyn River through ancient red sandstone 200 kilometres east of Almaty. The Valley of Castles section concentrates the most dramatic sculpted formations in a 2-kilometre walkable section, while multi-day trekking through the canyon system to the river downstream reveals a geological gallery carved over 12 million years.
