Overview

The Dana to Feynan walk drops through four bioclimatic zones in a single day: you leave the Ottoman stone village of Dana perched on the canyon rim at 1,200 m among juniper and cypress, and by late afternoon you are walking through acacia-dotted desert near sea level, watching Nubian ibex pick across the sandstone walls. Jordan's largest nature reserve funnels an astonishing amount of life through this one wadi — sunbirds, foxes and several hundred plant species along the gradient. The finish is the point: Feynan Ecolodge, candle-lit and solar-powered on the edge of copper country the Romans mined as Phaenon, where Bedouin staff walk you out to 2,000-year-old smelting slag heaps and the stars come up over the rift. Book Feynan well ahead — it is the only place to stay — and carry all your water for the descent, as the wadi is dry most of the year. March-April and October-November dodge both the summer heat and the winter flash-flood risk; around £400 covers a week with guides and the lodge.
