Overview

Fairy Meadows is the front-row seat for Nanga Parbat: a grass shelf at 3,300 m looking straight into the Raikot face, four and a half vertical kilometres of ice and seracs rising to the 8,126 m summit of the world's ninth-highest mountain. Getting there is the filter — from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, local jeeps grind up a shelf road most people ride once with their eyes shut, then a two-to-three-hour walk through pine forest delivers you to the meadow's wooden huts and campsites. Stay two nights minimum: the face makes its own weather, and the reward for patience is dawn silence, the mountain pink, and the Raikot Glacier creaking below. The day-walk continues via Beyal Camp to the viewpoint at the Raikot-side base camp, on the line of the 1930s German expeditions. June brings wildflowers and May-September is the season; the huts are basic, so bring a sleeping bag and buy food up from Gilgit or Chilas. Around £600 including Islamabad-Chilas transport days.
