The Nanda Devi Sanctuary is a unique geographical phenomenon, a 630-square-kilometre basin enclosed by a ring of peaks above 6000m with only one river gorge entrance passable to humans. Nanda Devi at 7816m stands alone in this extraordinary natural fortress. The sanctuary was closed to visitors in 1983 to allow ecological recovery, but guided expeditions with Indian Mountaineering Foundation permits resume periodically.
