Overview

Api (7,132 m) rules the far north-western corner of Nepal, in Darchula district where the country wedges between India and Tibet — and almost nobody goes. The trek to its base camp runs up the Chameliya river valley through the Api Nampa Conservation Area: stone villages where a trekking group is still an event, oak and pine forest, then the last settlement at Ghusa and shepherd pastures leading to base-camp meadows around 4,000 m, with Api's huge snow architecture climbing three vertical kilometres above. This is expedition-style in logistics if not technicality: full camping, supplies carried in from the roadhead bazaars, a crew who know the far west, and route information that ages badly — trails wash out and bridges move. Getting there is half the undertaking: fly to Dhangadhi, then two long jeep days up the Mahakali corridor. April-May and October-November. Around £3,000 for a 14-day supported trek. If you want proof the Himalaya still has empty valleys, this is it — you may not meet another party all fortnight.
