Overview

Inle Lake works on stilts: whole villages, monasteries and tomato farms stand in two metres of water, tended by Intha farmers who row standing up with one leg wrapped around the oar. A kayak gets you off the tourist longtail circuit and into the quiet capillaries — floating gardens creaking on their reed anchors, the lotus-silk weavers of In Paw Khon spinning thread from snapped stems, and the creek up to Indein, where mossy stupas crowd a hillside like a stone forest. Dawn is the lake's hour — mist to the waterline, fishermen posing their conical nets against a white sun — so sleep in Nyaungshwe or a lakeside guesthouse and be paddling by six. November to February is the cool dry season; bring a fleece, because mornings on the water are genuinely cold at 900 m. Dress modestly for monastery stops and carry cash — nothing takes cards. A local boatman shadowing your kayak solves navigation and lunch at once. Around £300 for the week.
