Arizona Grand Canyon Rim to River

Overview

Go down the South Kaibab, up the Bright Angel, and give the Canyon three nights rather than the day-dash the Park Service rightly discourages. The South Kaibab drops 1,450 m in 11 km along an exposed ridgeline — Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge, Skeleton Point — with two billion years of strata scrolling past and no water or shade anywhere on it. Cross the Black Bridge and the Colorado is suddenly loud and cold beneath cliffs of black Vishnu schist. Camp at Bright Angel Campground (or enter the lottery far ahead for Phantom Ranch bunks), day-hike to Ribbon Falls, then climb out past the cottonwoods of Havasupai Gardens. Heat is the variable that kills here, literally: the inner gorge runs 10-15°C hotter than the rim, and warm-season days demand pre-dawn starts, a litre of water an hour and electrolytes. Spring and autumn are the sane windows. Backcountry permits go by lottery on recreation.gov about four months out — that, not fitness, is the real bottleneck. Around £400 covers permits, camp fees and Flagstaff or Tusayan logistics for the week.
