The Jordan Trail runs 675 km from Umm Qais in the olive-green north to the Red Sea at Aqaba, and thru-hiking it takes about 40 days through every landscape the country owns. The section everyone remembers is Dana to Petra: four days descending the Great Rift escarpment through the Dana Biosphere Reserve's gorges, then arriving at Petra the back way — cresting a ridge to find the Monastery (ad-Deir) below you, no ticket queue in sight. South of Petra the trail crosses Wadi Rum's sandstone towers before the final dry ranges drop to the sea. Water is the variable that organises everything: southern desert stages need caches or vehicle support arranged through the Jordan Trail Association, and four litres a day is a minimum in the warm months. Villages en route offer genuinely warm homestay hospitality — learn a few Arabic courtesies and accept the tea. Walk it in March-April or October-November; summer is dangerous, and spring desert nights still drop near freezing. Budget around £4,500 for the full traverse with homestays, Bedouin camps and supported desert stages.
