The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage network on the Kii Peninsula is UNESCO-listed alongside the Camino de Santiago as one of only two pilgrim routes with World Heritage status. The Nakahechi route from Tanabe to Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine passes through ancient cedar forest, riverside shrines, and oji subsidiary shrine stations over five days.
