Moscow to Vladivostok by bicycle is about 9,000 kilometres and roughly three months of your life: the Urals, then taiga that runs unbroken for days, the endless birch of the West Siberian plain, and finally the green hills of the Far East rolling down to the Pacific. Lake Baikal arrives mid-ride like a promise kept - the deepest lake on earth, cold and impossibly clear, with the Trans-Siberian railway threading its shore as your constant companion east. Beyond Chita, the Amur highway's vast empty stages begin, and in the Far East forests you are cycling through genuine Amur tiger country - an idea that sharpens evening camp routines wonderfully. This is a summer-window expedition: leave Moscow in May and ride the season east, because the sums do not work outside it. Truck traffic on two-lane sections, 200-kilometre resupply gaps and mosquito plagues are the real daily adversaries. The paperwork is the variable now: long-stay Russian visas and current entry rules need checking honestly against your nationality before you plan anything at all. Budget around £5,000 self-supported - wild camps, cafes, guesthouses - and pack the patience of a freight train.
