Berths are winnable, not bought: race programmes recruit through crew lists, sailing CVs and deliveries, and an offshore personal survival course plus genuine miles open doors fastest. Say yes to the delivery trips - that is where you earn the race seat. The Mediterranean's gentle reputation dies offshore in autumn: Middle Sea fleets have been hammered by 40-knot mistral one year and becalmed the next, so bring full offshore kit and a stomach for watch systems.
