Shikoku Island, Japan · Japan
The Shikoku Henro is an 1200-kilometre walking pilgrimage visiting 88 Buddhist temples associated with the monk Kukai, completing a circuit of Shikoku Island. Walking the entire route takes 45-60 days and transforms participants through the experience of osettai hospitality from strangers who give food, lodging, and gifts to white-clad pilgrims as a spiritual practice. The henro is Japan's most transformative journey.
