Overview

The Grossglockner, 3,798m, is Austria's highest mountain and its most coveted summit day. The normal route from Lucknerhaus above Kals climbs past the Stüdlhütte onto the Ködnitzkees glacier, reaching the Adlersruhe — the Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte, at 3,454m Austria's highest refuge — for a short night before the dawn push: cramponed snow to the Kleinglockner, then the famous squeeze across the Glocknerscharte notch, a metre wide with 600m of air on either side, to the summit cross. It is a genuine mountaineering route — glacier travel, fixed-rope scrambling, absolute no-slip ridge — and summer weekends produce queues at the scharte that can turn a two-hour summit round into five. Go midweek, go early, and book the hut months ahead. Most parties hire a guide in Kals, which is money well spent for the descent alone. July and August offer the most settled conditions. Around £900 covers a five-day acclimatisation-and-summit programme with hut half-board; a 1:1 guide adds roughly €500.
