Overview

The Hajar Mountains put 3,000m of rock between the Gulf of Oman and the desert, and Jebel Shams — the Mountain of the Sun, 3,009m — presides over the lot. The signature walk is the W6 Balcony Walk: a ledge path along the wall of Wadi Ghul, the 'Grand Canyon of Arabia', with a kilometre of air below your feet, ending at the abandoned cliff village of As Sab, whose stone houses and falaj channels cling under the rim. Around it, days link Nizwa's Friday livestock market, the terraced falaj village of Misfat al Abriyeen, and summit-plateau camps where the stars are ferocious. Winter is the season — November to March brings perfect walking temperatures, while summer is dangerous heat. Carry more water than feels reasonable regardless, because springs are few, dress modestly in the villages, and hire a 4WD: the final climb to the plateau is steep gravel. Oman is safe, courteous and easy to travel. A week self-driving with guesthouse and wild-camp nights runs about £700 plus flights to Muscat.
