Namib Desert, Namibia · Namibia
Racing 250km across the Namib self-supported means carrying every calorie for a week while the world's oldest desert runs the thermostat: near-freezing dawn starts under the Southern Cross, 40°C by noon on the gravel plains, and dune stages where each step gives half of itself back. The NamibRand's apricot dunes, fairy circles and mountain-ringed valleys make it a strange privilege — oryx watch you suffer past ancient welwitschias, and the night sky over camp belongs to one of the darkest reserves on earth. The discipline that finishes the race is unglamorous: pack weight under 10kg including seven days of food, electrolytes managed hourly, feet taped before blisters exist, and sand gaiters glued to shoes that drain. Checkpoints ration water; everything else is on your back. Events run in the cooler April-June and August-September windows. Entry, kit and Windhoek logistics push £3,000 before flights — and train for months with the loaded pack, because the pack, not the distance, is what breaks people.
