Overview

The Northern Alps traverse from Shin-Hotaka to Kamikochi crosses the roofline of Japan with a mountain hut every few hours — futons, hot dinners and beer vending machines at 3,000m — so you climb hard days carrying almost nothing. The centrepiece is Yarigatake, 3,180m, the 'Matterhorn of Japan', whose final spear of rock goes on chains and ladders to a summit shrine; hardened scramblers continue south over the Daikiretto, a notorious knife-edge gap towards the Hotaka peaks, before descending the Yarisawa valley to Kamikochi's clear river and reflection ponds. Hut logistics are the real skill: reserve ahead (essential around Obon in mid-August and autumn weekends), carry cash, and start every day at dawn because afternoon cloud and thunder are the pattern. The Daikiretto is no-fall terrain — skip it via the valley if the rock is wet — and typhoon season can rearrange any itinerary in late summer. July to September is the window. Around £1,200 covers a five-day traverse with huts at roughly ¥13,000 half-board, plus the alpine bus into Kamikochi and an onsen soak at the end.
