Overview
Upper Dolpo is one of the most remote and culturally preserved regions in the Himalayas, requiring a special restricted area permit and a challenging approach across passes above 5000m. The Dolpo people maintain a Tibetan Buddhist culture essentially unchanged since the medieval period, documented by Peter Matthiessen in The Snow Leopard. Phoksumdo Lake at 3611m is the deepest lake in Nepal and among the most beautiful on earth.
