Overview

Flores rewards the overlander: a single road — the Trans-Flores Highway — switchbacks along the island's volcanic spine for 670 kilometres, and a trekking-centred week along it collects experiences that would headline anywhere else. The anchor is Kelimutu: three crater lakes on one summit holding different colours — turquoise, rust, ink-black — and changing them independently as volcanic gases shift the chemistry. Be on the rim for dawn from the village of Moni; the mist burns off in bands and the lakes appear one by one. Westward, the highland village of Wae Rebo sits in a forest amphitheatre reached only by a three-hour climb — its cone-roofed mbaru niang houses take overnight guests, and morning coffee in the smoke-filled main house is the island's cultural high point. The Ngadha villages around Bajawa, Bena above all, add megalithic ancestor shrines beneath Inerie volcano, itself a steep but non-technical pre-dawn climb. Finish at Labuan Bajo for the Komodo boats — dragons on Rinca, manta cleaning stations, pink-sand snorkelling. April to September is the dry season. Buses are slow and the hairpins blind, so a car with driver (about £40 a day) is the sane option; a comfortable week runs £900 including guides and homestays.
