Aoraki Mount Cook, at 3,724 metres, is New Zealand's highest mountain and a serious mountaineering objective by any line: heavily crevassed glaciers, infamously fast-moving Southern Alps weather, and enough objective danger that the peak has claimed more than 80 lives. The standard route climbs the Linda Glacier from Plateau Hut — a 15-hour-plus summit day threading icefall beneath the East Face to the summit ice cap — while Zurbriggen Ridge gives stronger parties a more direct, elegant alternative. Nothing prepares you for the scale of the place: the Caroline Face drops 2,000 metres in a single sweep as the ski plane banks onto the Grand Plateau. November to January offers the soundest snow bridges; by late summer the Linda is a broken maze and most guides stop taking bookings. Fly in from Mount Cook Airport, budget for a weather day or three trapped in Plateau Hut, and unless you have genuine alpine ice experience, hire an IFMGA guide — this peak punishes optimism. Acclimatisation walks up the Hooker Valley, past the iceberg-dotted terminal lake, fill the waiting days.
