The Yuzawa onsen region in Niigata prefecture and the Nozawa Onsen village in Nagano offer the finest combination of deep powder skiing, mountain village culture, and traditional hot spring bathing in Japan. Nozawa's thirteen free soto-yu bathhouses, funded and cleaned by the villagers themselves, sit a few minutes' walk from the Yamabiko ridge where the powder bowls hold cold, dry snow into March.
