Gangotri · India
The Gangotri Glacier in the Garhwal Himalaya is the source of the Ganges River, considered the holiest river in Hinduism, and the approach to Gaumukh at 4,023 metres is one of India's most sacred trekking routes. The glacier snout has retreated 22 kilometres since 1780 and is visibly retreating during any multi-year comparison. The extension to Tapovan meadow at 4,463 metres below the Shivling peak is one of India's finest trekking destinations.
