Overview
Kamchatka in the Russian Far East has the highest concentration of active volcanoes on Earth, with 29 of the 160 volcanoes currently active and Klyuchevskaya Sopka the highest active volcano in the Northern Hemisphere at 4,750 metres. Helicopter access to remote volcano groups allows multi-day camping on volcanic caldera rims with thermal hot springs for bathing. Brown bears are so abundant that every group requires an armed ranger escort in the field.
