Santa Marta · Colombia
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia rises from Caribbean beaches to the 5,700-metre twin summits of Pico Colon and Pico Simon Bolivar in only 42 kilometres, the fastest elevation gain from sea to summit anywhere on Earth. The approach through the indigenous Arhuaco and Kogui territory is controlled by community permits and guided ascents only. The summit glacier is retreating but the high-altitude paramo landscape is extraordinary.
