Overview

Sailing out of Oban drops you into a cruising ground that stands comparison with anywhere on Earth when the weather plays along: the Sound of Mull opens into a maze of islands, sea lochs and tide gates where you plan each day around the tidal atlas rather than a road map. A ten-day loop might pass Duart Castle to Tobermory's painted seafront, round the wild Ardnamurchan lighthouse - the most westerly point of the British mainland - and anchor off the Small Isles of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna beneath the jagged skyline of the Skye Cuillin, with minke whales, porpoises and white-tailed eagles as regular escorts. Runs ashore mean hill walks straight from the anchorage and single-malt pilgrimages, from Tobermory's distillery to a southward detour for Islay. This is proper pilotage water: the races off Ardnamurchan and through the sounds demand real seamanship, so charter bareboat only with solid RYA miles, or take a skippered berth and learn as you go. May and June bring the driest, brightest sailing and endless daylight; midges own the anchorages ashore from July. A skippered shared-boat week-plus works out around £2,000 per person with food and moorings. Pack full offshore waterproofs whatever the forecast promises.
