Padum · India
The Zanskar Valley trek from Padum to Leh via the Zanskar Gorge is one of the most challenging and rewarding routes in the Indian Himalaya, following a river gorge that is impassable for most of the year. The 170-kilometre route over the Singi La pass at 5,059 metres and through the dramatic narrow canyon descends through a landscape unchanged for centuries. The remote Stongde and Karsha monasteries cling to cliff faces above the valley.
