Overview
The Altai Republic in southern Siberia is where Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China meet at the Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola massif. Horse trekking through the Chulyshman valley and over the Katu-Yaryk pass, a near-vertical descent to the Altai plateau, passes through one of Russia's most spectacular and least-visited landscapes. The region is sacred to the indigenous Altai people and contains thousands of ancient burial kurgans.
