Overview
Tonga is one of the only places in the world where swimming with humpback whales is legally permitted, during the July-October breeding season when mothers bring their calves to the warm Vava'u lagoon. The 15-metre whales move with extraordinary grace beneath the surface, and calves sometimes approach swimmers with open curiosity. Strict regulations limit group sizes to ensure minimal disturbance, and the encounters are among the most moving wildlife experiences available.
