Overview
The Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia is not a sand desert but a vast gravel and rock plateau dotted with dramatic dune seas, dinosaur fossil beds, and remote Mongolian herder families living as their ancestors did for centuries. The Khongoryn Els sand dunes are the largest in Mongolia at 100 metres high and 100 kilometres long, producing a deep musical roar when the wind blows across the crest. Camel trekking between ger camps covers ground impossible on foot.
