Mount Kailash in western Tibet is the most sacred mountain on Earth for four religions - Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Bon - and no climber has ever stood on its summit or been given permission to attempt it. The 52-kilometre kora circumambulation at altitudes of 4,600 to 5,630 metres is undertaken by thousands of pilgrims annually, many prostrating the full circuit over weeks. The north face reflects in the holy Manasarovar and Rakshastal lakes below.
