Overview
Yakushima Island in southern Japan contains cryptomeria cedar trees over 2,000 years old, including the legendary Jomon Sugi estimated at 7,200 years, making it the oldest living tree in Japan. The interior mountain of Miyanoura-dake at 1,936 metres is the highest point in Kyushu and is covered in gnarled ancient forest that inspired the forest landscapes of Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke. The island receives 10,000 millimetres of rain annually and the moss-covered forest has an otherworldly quality.
