Overview
The Kazakh eagle hunters of western Mongolia's Bayan-Ulgii province have practised berkutchi eagle hunting for over 4,000 years, training golden eagles to hunt foxes and rabbits on horseback across the Altai steppe. Staying with a hunting family during the autumn migration and witnessing the training of an immature eagle is one of the most extraordinary cultural encounters available anywhere. The annual Golden Eagle Festival in Ulgii brings all hunters together in October.
