Overview

Ten metres down off Providenciales the reef shelf simply stops: the Wall drops vertically into the indigo of the Columbus Passage, a channel more than 2,000 metres deep between the Caicos and Turks banks. You hang at 20 metres with black coral fans below your fins and grey reef sharks cruising the edge; out at the remote West Caicos and French Cay sites, visibility routinely hits 30 metres and silky sharks appear mid-water. From January to April humpback whales migrate through the passage towards the Silver Bank breeding grounds, and their song carries into the water column - hearing it mid-dive is the trip's goosebump moment. This is easy, warm, boat-based diving, but the best sites are exposed: winter swell can blow out West Caicos for days at a time, so book at least five diving days to be sure of the walls. Avoid the August to October hurricane peak; February to April combines calm seas with whale song. A week with two-tank boat dives, gear and Provo accommodation runs about £2,200 excluding flights, and an Advanced Open Water card earns you the deeper wall starts.
