Overview
The Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia form a dramatic highland plateau dissected by erosion into cathedral columns and sheer escarpments dropping thousands of metres to the lowlands. The endangered Walia ibex, gelada baboons, and Ethiopian wolves inhabit these highlands, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trek to Ras Dashen, Africa's fourth-highest peak at 4,550 metres, crosses the roof of Ethiopia.
