Overview

You reach your bedroom by zipline. The Gibbon Experience strings a network of steel cables, some over 500 metres long, through the forest canopy of the Nam Kan National Park in Bokeo province, north-western Laos, linking treehouses built 30 metres up in emergent trees. Clip in, check your trolley, and commit: the cable sags, the forest floor drops away, and you land on a platform where dinner also arrives by zipline. The moment that stays with you comes at about 5am, when the western black crested gibbons begin to sing, a rising, whooping duet that carries for miles through the mist below your bed. The catch is the season: in the June to September rains the cables still run, but leeches multiply and the ridge trails turn to grease, so aim for November to March. Book weeks ahead directly with the project (profits fund forest protection and anti-poaching patrols) and reach Huay Xai the night before; it is a short hop from the Chiang Khong border crossing with Thailand.
