Overview
The Kumano Kodo is a network of ancient pilgrimage routes in the Kii Peninsula that have been walked for over 1,000 years, connecting the imperial capital Kyoto with the three Grand Shrines of Kumano. The Nakahechi route is the most historic section, passing through cedar forest and small onsen villages where pilgrims have sought purification since the Heian period. The route shares UNESCO World Heritage status with the Camino de Santiago.
