Nanga Parbat Rupal Face Trek

Overview

Nothing on earth out-scales the Rupal face: from the meadows at Tarashing you look up 4,600 vertical metres to the summit of Nanga Parbat at 8,125 m — the greatest single mountain wall in the world, close enough that you hear it. Avalanches peel off the face day and night, arriving as a delayed boom that rolls around the valley. The trek itself is surprisingly gentle for the setting: three to five days up the Rupal Valley through summer pastures and willow-lined villages to Herrligkoffer Base Camp and on to the Latobah meadows, with an optional push toward the Mazeno side of the mountain for wilder ground. Access is the real undertaking. Fly or drive to Gilgit, then jeep via Astore to Tarashing — landslides and road closures are routine, so pad the itinerary by a day at each end. Foreigners should expect police registration checkpoints in the Astore Valley; a local guide smooths everything and costs little. July and August give the best weather window and full wildflower meadows. This is one of the great value treks anywhere: around £900 for ten days including guide, porters and jeeps — Pakistani hospitality included at no charge.
